The Scleroderma Book or Show It Love

The Scleroderma Book: A Guide for Patients and Families

Author: Maureen Mayes

The Scleroderma Book has long been considered the leading source of information for patients suffering with this disease. Now comes the Second Edition of this highly respected volume, extensively revised by Maureen Mayes, M.D., the leading authority in this field.
Writing specifically for patients and their families, Dr. Mayes draws on her extensive experience treating scleroderma to provide up-to-date, practical information that will help patients manage their symptoms and improve their quality of life. Dr. Mayes begins with an easily accessible description of the basic facts, distinguishing between the many manifestations of the disease, ranging from localized scleroderma (small patches of hardened skin, most common in children, which tend to clear up over time) to systemic scleroderma, which can attack the lungs, the kidneys, and the blood vessels, and can be life threatening. Equally important, she offers sympathetic and reassuring advice on matters that often concern patients, such as the best course of action for those who want children, what to do if the disease affects your sex life, and what you can do to help your doctor treat your illness more effectively. The book concludes with a good humored, frank discussion about how to cope, day in and day out, with an uncertain future--how to be a "person living with" scleroderma, not a "victim suffering from" it. The new edition has updated chapters on the genetics of scleroderma and on new treatments for complications of this disease.
Touching on virtually every aspect of this disorder, The Scleroderma Book provides a reliable source of information and reassurance for patients of any age and no matter how severe theirform of the disease.

Reviewer: Tammy P Cheng, MD (Barnes-Jewish Hospital)
Description: This is an information resource for patients with scleroderma and their families. The book explains in detail the basics about scleroderma, including the varied manifestations of scleroderma in different organ systems.
Purpose: The objective is to serve as a "guide for patients and families." This book will serve well as a comprehensive source of information for patients who wish to learn more about their disease.
Audience: It is intended for the lay population, specifically patients and their families, and the author appears to be a credible authority.
Features: The basic epidemiology, genetics, and manifestations of scleroderma are covered. A section at the end discusses how to cope with the disease. The organization is fairly pedantic, perhaps too much so for a lay target audience.
Assessment: This book does a good job of explaining the various facets of scleroderma to lay people interested in learning everything about disease. It should be a nice starting point for patients who want to find out everything about their potentially complicated disease. My concern is that in these days of Internet searches, the format may seem archaic compared to Google searches.

Mary Grace Flaherty - Library Journal

Duke, a personal trainer to celebrities like Kirsten Dunst, Denzel Washington, and Julianne Moore, has crafted an inspirational volume to help women "celebrate the body you have, get the body you want." She addresses not only the physical aspects of fitness but also the spiritual and emotional components needed to maintain it. Women will appreciate her emphasis on sense of self; the point here is to realize the potential of one's individual physique, not aim for an unattainable Hollywood ideal. Each of the three parts ("I Am," "I Can," and "I Do") features motivational text, "woman warrior" exercises, healthy recipes, milestones, and a workout log. Duke has an approachable style and blends references to current scientific research with information on different cultural goddesses throughout. Her book creates the effect of having a personal trainer, and the general public will love it. Highly recommended for public libraries, particularly where self-help and fitness books are popular.
