Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Brian T. Larsen, MS, DPT (Utah State University College of Education & Human Services)
Description: This book provides a comprehensive orientation to the history, importance of, and proper procedure in performing muscle testing and function for both pathologic and normal populations. The fourth edition was published in 1993.
Purpose: The purpose of the fifth edition is to follow a more logical order in each chapter than earlier editions to describe each region of the body from head to toe. Another purpose is to add new drawings, charts, photographs, and color to augment the information in the book and facilitate the learning process. The objectives of the authors are worthy in that new and more direct ways of organizing and presenting information facilitate the learning process and make it easier to refer to quickly in a clinical situation.
Audience: According to the authors, the book is written for practitioners. In my opinion, it is appropriately written for practitioners in orthopedic and neurological settings, as well as for students. The author is a highly credible authority in the field of muscle testing and function.
Features: In addition to the normal population, the book covers particular pathologies and how muscle function and testing are subsequently affected/related. The individual regions of the body are addressed from head to foot, explaining how to properly position and perform strength testing to isolate particular musculature. This edition has done a particularly good job of addressing posture in detail and gives good clinical descriptions. Of particular note is the information presented on various pathologies such as polio, scoliosis, etc., with suggested readings. Unique features are the color charts, photographs, and artistic renditions of isolated human musculature, which add aid learning and aesthetic beauty.
Assessment: The fifth edition provides a logical format for understanding muscle testing and function and adds helpful charts and photographs to augment the learning process which make it an easy clinical reference. This edition is justified because it contains additional chapters in order to present a more comprehensive explanation for each region of the human body and to give a more detailed explanation of various pathologies.
